These robots are so important because they inspired people to create the robots that we have now. For example, the robotic clockwork of the elephant clock inspired the Devol robotic arm. History inspires people to do great things. These robots and the inventors changed the way that the world works forever.
Historical Roboics
1. The science of robotics came around in the 20th century but there were some robots that were built a very long time ago. For example, the ancient Greeks and Romans developed simple robots such tools, toys, and parts of religious ceremony's.
2. In the middle ages, an inventor named Al-Jazari invented many robots, one of which was an elephant clock that moved and sounded at the hour. Al- Jazari was a great inventor. He was believed to be the first person to fly.
3. In Europe, a robot monk was invented. It was a monk that was carrying a cross and it would kiss the cross. The maker is unknown but it was an act of religious gratitude. This helped spark peoples interest in robotics. Back in the middle ages, the majority of people were religious, so this robot monk appealed to the majority of the population.
Victorian Robots
The industrial revolution increased focus on mathematics, engineering, and science. Charles Babbage developed the foundations of computer science. In the Victorian era, there were a lo of steam powered machines. Even today, we use some of the robots that were invented from the Victorian Era.
Twentieth Century to today
In the 1950's, George Devol designed the first robotic arm. He made the company Devol that was the first robotic company. It was so successful that George Devol was on the tonight show in 1966. One of the leaders in George Devol's company was a man named Joseph Engel. He helped George Devol when he was creating the robotic arm. The robotic arm was a breakthrough in robotics. It is considered one of the most important robots ever created. It was a base for all of the new science and inventing that would come about in the future.
